Reflections from a Rare Academic Visit to the Land of the Rising Sun There are journeys that take us to a place, and there are journeys that change the way we understand a place. My recent visit to Arunachal Pradesh was, in many ways, the latter. Arunachal Pradesh is often described as the Land of the Rising Sun —and the description acquires a very tangible meaning when one experiences its early dawn. The difference between Hyderabad and Itanagar is striking. While the early morning prayer time (Fajar Namaz) in Hyderabad may begin around 4:30 a.m., in Itanagar it can begin nearly an hour earlier. Moving further east, the dawn arrives even sooner. This simple difference in time and geography becomes a fascinating reminder of India's extraordinary longitudinal and cultural expanse.
